Oral cancer is an incredibly aggressive and deadly disease, affecting approximately 43,250 Americans every year. Only about half of these patients survive for past the five year mark following diagnosis, making early detection a pivotal component of successful treatment. At Boston Smile Center in Brookline, MA, Dr. Alan Sasson and his team are dedicated to providing our patients with state-of-the-art diagnostic exams, including oral cancer screening, during general dentistry checkups.
Signs of Oral Cancer
Oral cancer is most easily and successfully treated when the disease is detected and addressed in its earliest phases. If it is allowed to progress into advanced stages, the likelihood that treatment will succeed is substantially diminished. This is another reason that routine general dentistry exams and cleanings are so vital to overall oral health. Dr. Sasson will meticulously check every surface of your mouth, examining the gums, tongue, palates, and cheek linings for any sign of abnormalities or lesions.
Patient vigilance is also important, and if you notice anything unusual about any of the soft tissues of your mouth or your throat, it is important that you call us as soon as possible to schedule an exam. Some of the common symptoms associated with oral cancer include:
- Persistent cough or hoarseness
- White or red patches anywhere within the mouth
- Unexplained pain and/or bleeding that won’t subside
- A sore that does not go away
- Unusual sensations, including numbness and tingling
- Discomfort when moving the tongue or jaw
- Thickening of tissue anywhere in the oral cavity
- Difficulty chewing or speaking
Observing any of these symptoms does not necessarily indicate the presence of oral cancer, but each of them should be considered serious and should be evaluated by your dentist.

April 27, 2012
No matter what time of the year it is, it’s always a great time to schedule your next regular dental visit. But because April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month, there’s no better time than now if you haven’t come to our Brookline dental office yet for an appointment.
During your appointment, Dr. Sasson can talk with you about how your smile is doing and conduct a thorough oral exam, complete with oral cancer screening. This last step—the oral cancer screening—is one of the most important aspects of any dental appointment.
Because an oral cancer screening could save your life. Many cases of oral cancer aren’t detected until the disease is already in its later stages, when it’s harder to treat. Which is why Dr. Sasson completes an oral cancer screening as part of every regular exam—because catching it early could save your life.
This holds true even if you don’t have any of the risk factors commonly associated with oral cancer. Maybe you’ve never smoked or used another tobacco product in your life, and maybe you rarely if ever drink alcohol. That’s no guarantee. An estimated 25% of oral cancers occur in patients who have no risk factors at all.
Do you want to find out more about oral cancer and how it can be found and treated? Dr. Sasson would be happy to answer any questions you might have, especially during Oral Cancer Awareness Month. Give our Brookline dental office a call today to schedule you appointment.
