Dr. Alan Sasson –

Dr. Sasson’s 35+ year career in the dental field began at the Goldman School of Graduate Dentistry at Boston University. Following graduation, he advanced his skills, knowledge, and training by earning his certification in Oral Implantology from Brookdale Hospital in New York. In the coming decades, he published several papers in peer-reviewed publications, like The Laryngoscope, and held faculty appointments at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine. As a result, he is a widely respected dentist and a leader in the Boston dental community. To this day, he continues to pursue advanced training as well; he is currently an active member of the American Dental Association, the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, the International Association for Orthodontics, and several other professional organizations.

The previously mentioned accomplishments are certainly important, but what really makes him stand out from the rest is his patient-centered philosophy of care. He genuinely enjoys sitting down with each patient to learn about their unique dental needs and smile goals. In other words, he doesn’t treat teeth; he treats people! So, you will never feel like just another patient with Dr. Sasson.

Since Dr. Sasson is the founder of the Career in Dental Assisting Institute, much of his time outside the office is spent pouring into the next generation of dental professionals. Of course, he loves spending lots of time with his family as well, and he enjoys swimming, lying on his hammock, and playing golf when the weather is nice!

Dr. Avi Shainhouse –

Dr. Shainhouse is proud to work alongside Dr. Sasson to help patients with gum disease and tooth loss achieve healthy, happy smiles again! Originally from Canada, he obtained his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Western Ontario. Then, he moved to Boston and pursued advanced training in both periodontics and implant dentistry. Now he has a specialist degree from New York University, and he is a board-certified periodontist! Plus, he is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontics, a Fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada, and an active member of the American Academy of Periodontology. Like Dr. Sasson, he genuinely enjoys getting to know each and every person so he can provide the custom, cutting-edge, and compassionate dental care they deserve.

I just recently moved to Boston and have only ever seen one other dentist, and so I was nervous but everyone at Dr. Sasson's office made me feel right at home. The hygienist was very thorough and broke down all the new information for me very clearly. Dr. Sasson listened to my concerns and helped me make a plan to improve. I will be going back for cleanings and anything else needed!

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get emergency dental care?

Dental emergencies can strike at any time. If the unthinkable happens, don’t panic. Your first step should always be to give Boston Smile Center a call and let someone on our team assist you.

If you are experiencing a life-threatening emergency, please call 911 immediately.

Most hospital emergency rooms, mobile clinics, and urgent care centers are not properly equipped to handle dental emergencies, and thus if you go to one of these locations you are unlikely to be treated.

In most cases, you can expect to get an immediate appointment with us, but please call us directly and let us help you.

Please note that dental emergencies are often a sign that there may be bigger dental problems present, and that it’s time to get back into the habit of regularly visiting your dentist. Regular dental check-ups and cleaning appointments can help prevent future emergencies, saving you time, money, and your natural teeth!

How much does a dental check-up & cleaning cost in Newton?

The cost of a dental check-up and cleaning can vary based on a variety of factors, including your location and your individual oral health.

Every check-up and cleaning should begin with a patient health history and discussion of any of your questions and concerns. It should also include a thorough examination completed by your dentist, as well as a professional cleaning and an oral cancer screening.

The average cost for a dental check-up and cleaning here in the United States ranges between $200 and $350.

If you have dental insurance, the fees for your check-up and cleaning (including any out-of-pocket copays) are negotiated with us by your insurance provider.

What level of education is required to be a dentist?

Here in the United States, all dentists must earn either a Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) or a Doctor of Dental Sciences (DDS) from one of the nation’s 67 accredited dental schools.

Acceptance into dental school requires a bachelor's degree (and very high grades) in a major that is heavy in both math and science.

Dental school is an additional three years, combining classroom and hands-on learning.

Following dental school, some dentists choose to continue their education by earning one of 12 specializations recognized by the American Dental Association. These require an additional three or more years of dental school training.

Following graduation, all dentists are required to complete a minimum number of continuing education hours to maintain their dental license.
