A: Invisalign is an FDA-approved treatment that uses a patented thermoplastic design to move teeth through controlled, strategic force. Before treatment can begin, your plan will be mapped out by your doctor. X-rays, photos, and impressions of your teeth will be made, and this information is sent off to the Invisalign lab. Here, your series of trays is manufactured from smooth plastic. Each tray is designed to make slight adjustments to the position of your teeth.
A: Once you’ve begun treatment, you wear each tray for two weeks before advancing to the next in the series. You should be wearing your trays for 20 to 22 hours each day — giving you enough time to remove them before meals, cleaning, or even an important meeting.
A: Each case varies depending on the patient’s orthodontic needs. Serious dental misalignments, like a cross bite and gapped teeth, require longer treatment than someone only dealing with minor gaps, for example. On average, Invisalign treatment lasts around one year.
A: The only discomfort you should feel during your Invisalign treatment is that of progress. Teeth and gums will feel sore as they move into proper position, but the pain is temporary and often mild. Invisalign should be more comfortable than traditional braces, as smooth plastic does not rub blisters into your delicate cheeks, gums, lips, or tongue.
