What are CEREC Same-Day Dental Crowns?

Like a traditional dental crown, a CEREC crown is a custom cap that fully covers a tooth to restore a tooth that is damaged, worn down, weakened, or decayed. The difference is in how it is made: while a traditional crown is produced at a separate dental laboratory over a couple of weeks, a CEREC crown is designed and milled right here in our office thanks to state-of-the-art technology.

Our team creates a precise virtual impression of your tooth using a digital infrared camera, so there is no need for messy putty molds. Specialized software then determines the exact shape and size of your crown, and a high-speed milling machine carves it from a solid block of tooth-colored ceramic. The entire restoration is completed in a single visit. Because CEREC crowns are made from lifelike, metal-free materials, they blend in seamlessly with your natural smile.

The Process of Getting a CEREC Same-Day Dental Crown

Once we confirm that you’re a candidate for a CEREC same-day dental crown, we can begin the process by removing a small amount of enamel from your tooth. After that, the necessary digital impressions are taken so that the crown can be designed. The necessary information is sent to the milling machine, which can create your crown in about 20 minutes. Once it’s done, we can polish it and make any necessary last-minute adjustments before attaching it to your tooth.

The Benefits of CEREC Crowns vs. Traditional Crowns

With CEREC same-day crowns, you can enjoy the convenience of only needing to schedule a single visit to have your restoration placed. But this is far from the only advantage they have over traditional dental crowns. Here’s a look at some of their other benefits:

  • They completely eliminate the need for a temporary crown.
  • They don’t require us to take physical impressions with messy, bad-tasting putty.
  • They can be personalized to blend in seamlessly with the rest of your smile.
  • They don’t contain any metal, which means you don’t have to worry about increased sensitivity to temperature.

When You Might Need a CEREC Crown

A dental crown is often the right solution when a tooth is too damaged for a simple filling but still healthy enough to save. Dr. Abugad may recommend a CEREC same-day crown in any of these situations:

  • A cracked, broken, or worn tooth that needs full coverage to restore strength and protect it from further damage.
  • A large filling where too little natural tooth structure remains to support another filling.
  • A tooth that has had root canal treatment and needs a crown to seal and protect it. Root canal therapy itself is referred to a trusted specialist within our network, and we place the final crown once your treatment is complete.
  • Restoring a dental implant with a natural-looking crown once the implant has fully healed.
  • A misshapen or discolored tooth that would benefit from the full, natural-looking coverage a crown provides.

Not sure which situation fits your smile? The best way to know is a short evaluation. We will examine the tooth, talk through your options, and let you know whether a same-day crown is the right choice.

CEREC Same-Day Crown FAQs

Yes. CEREC crowns are milled from a solid block of high-quality dental ceramic, giving them strength and durability comparable to traditional lab-made crowns. For most patients, a well-cared-for crown lasts many years, and the single-visit process does not compromise the fit or longevity of the final restoration.
Most CEREC same-day crowns are completed in a single visit of roughly two hours. That includes preparing the tooth, taking a digital scan, milling your custom crown on site, and bonding it into place. You walk out with your permanent crown the same day, with no temporary crown and no second appointment.
They do. CEREC crowns are made from tooth-colored ceramic and are shade-matched to blend in with your surrounding teeth. Because they contain no metal, there is no dark line at the gum and no concern about temperature sensitivity from metal.
Many dental plans cover crowns to some degree, though coverage varies by plan and the reason the crown is needed. Our team will review your benefits with you and explain your estimated costs before treatment begins. We also offer financing through CareCredit and Lending Club to help make treatment more manageable.
Caring for a CEREC crown is simple: brush twice a day, floss daily, and keep up with regular checkups and cleanings. Avoid using the crowned tooth to bite very hard objects like ice or pen caps. With routine care, your crown can protect and restore your tooth for many years.
